A place of heart, a story of character APA NERA
The APA NERA Residence was born from a deep attachment to Calenzana.
The owner was born there, as were his father and grandparents before him.
His family has always lived in this village between the sea and the mountains.
Creating a place to stay here was a simple and sincere way of keeping alive this strong connection with his Calenzane roots.
- And why this name, APA NERA?
It means “ black bee ” in Corsican.
It is a local, protected, hardy and precious species, which pollinates the flowers of the scrubland.
A symbol of patience, gentleness and adaptation, it embodies the spirit of the place.
Its import and export are prohibited to preserve its genetic purity.
- And according to legend…
In 1732, during the Corsican War of Independence against the Genoese, a battle broke out at the gates of the village.
The Calenzanais, in order to resist the German troops who had come to support Genoa, apparently resorted to unexpected means. From their windows, they threw hot oil, stones, and hives of black bees at the enemy.
Surprised and panicked, the soldiers fled.
The battle was bloody: around 500 German mercenaries were killed.
Even today, a commemorative plaque at the foot of the bell tower of the Saint-Blaise church in Calenzana (A Samulà) on the village square, recalls:
“campo santo dei TEDESCHI” January 14, 1732
Here even the bees defend their village.
Welcome to this place that we created with our hearts.
